“Bats with Fangs” is an acronym representing the most powerful internet companies that dominate the online world. These groups of companies revered as titans of the internet age control platforms, networks and gateways that provide e-commerce to billions of users across the globe.
The Fangs which sprouted in 2016, spearheaded by four internet companies: Facebook, Amazon, Netflix and Google, later morphed into Faamgs; Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft and Google. Their Asian counterparts, the BATS – Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent also sprouted forth as a feed-off from the excitement of sinister acronyms.
As at now the world cannot do without these tech giants who are gradually becoming oligopolies in their markets. The Faamgs, which are US owned, are worth more than $ 3 trillion U.S dollars between them by market capitalization, and the BATS worth around $988 billion U.S dollars by market capitalization. These companies’ financial traded indexes on the stock market have risen tremendously overtime, becoming very good investment options for investors.
Facebooks’ recent share price drop costing the company of $37 billion of market value may signal a strong incentive for some investors to buy but a look beyond the markets reveal a darker side and the fragility of our data and information in the hands of these tech wizards. The truth is as much as including a combination of these high yielding stocks in your port-folio may be a sure bet to higher returns in the future, there is also the constant reminder that these highly evolved technological predators need to invest more in securing our information and data.
